Check the size of your grandchilds school bag.  Buy backpacks with wide, padded and adjustable shoulder straps.  Padded straps help absorb the load; narrow straps can dig painfully into shoulders. Are you having difficulty getting your grandchild to go to bed at the proper time for his/her age?  A simple remedy is at hand.  Use the timer on the stove and when it goes off that's the time for bed.  I use it with our granddaughter and it works like a charm, there is never an argument and she knows that the bell means bedtime.  If your grandchild starts arguing with you, keep insisting that it’s time for bed, don’t give in to their demands, they will soon get the message.

Don't throw out  all that leftover wine: Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces.

Crayon marks on walls? This worked  wonderfully! A damp rag, dipped
in baking  soda. Comes off  with little effort (elbow grease that is!).

Use Empty toilet paper roll to store appliance cords. It keeps them
neat  and  you can  write on the roll what appliance it belongs  to.

When boiling corn on the cob, add a  pinch of sugar to help bring out the
corn's natural  sweetness.

Cure for headaches: Take a lime,  cut it in half, and rub it on your
forehead.   The  throbbing will go away.

I remember playing Pick Up Sticks when I was young and how much fun it was.  I bought a set for our granddaughter and she loves it.  Helps with eye and hand coordination.

Save an empty tissue box stuff it will small plastic bags.  Keep it in your car for rubbish, wet shoes, or other emergencies.

Remove chewing gum from leather by placing a small amount of peannut butter of the chewing gum.  Wait a few minutes then peel it off.  If removing chewing gum from fachric has left a stain, rub some peanut butter into the stain, wipe off, then rinse before washing the fabric.

If you don't like the smell of fried fish lingering in the house.  Next time you're going to fry, drop a small piece of peanut butter into the pan with the fish.

For a cool refreshing drink that well last most of the day, put a bottle of water in the freezer.

Freeze grapes, make a lovely refreshing snack in the hot weather.

If your eye glasses have tiny scratches on them.  Make a paste of talcum powder and water.  Rub gently onto the lens and wipe off.

A well rinsed dishwashing liquid bottle makes a handy dispenser for cooking oil  You can control how much you add, and you don't have to deal with messy drips.

Clean your oven racks. The easiest way to clean a blackened oven rack is to lay it gently on an old towel in your bathtub.  Fill the tub with warm water and some ammonia, then let it sit.

Please be careful.  Never mix products containing ammonia with bleach or products containing chlorine.  Ammonia and chlorine can form a deadly gas when combined.  Read labels carefully before mixing any cleaners.

Good way to clean mirrors.  Brew up a batch of strong tea, let it cool, then use it to clean your mirrors.  Buff it dry with a soft cloth for a great streak-free shine.

Over salted your soup.  Cut up a peeled potato into a few medium size pieces and add them to the pot for about 10 minutes.  Just as the potatoes are starting to get soft, remove them.  They will have absorbed the excess salt.

Ask your dentist for Tooth Mousse.  It will help reduce cavities in your grandchildren's teeth.  After brushing at night squeeze a little onto your finger and rub on the teeth, ensure that they don't drink anything afterwards so that the product has time to work.  Good for adults as well.

Sore eyes - boil 1 teaspoon coriander in a mug of water.  Moisten cotton buds and place on eyes for a few minutes.  Covering remaining liquid and place in fridge for future use.

If you have just had a tooth pulled, or if your grandchild has just lost a tooth, tea bags can help stop the bleeding.  Wet a tea bag with cool water and press into the spot the tooth came from.

Fun time for little ones.  Fill the little egg spaces inside an empty egg carton with different colour paints.  When finished, closed the lid and throw out.

To get rid of the musty smell from old furniture.  Wipe down with eucalyptus oil which is available from your local chemist.  I wiped down the inside of the drawers and the smell as gone.

If your favourite wool jersey shrank when you washed it.  Try soaking it in lukewarm water and add some shampoo.  It may help soften the fabric and allow you to reshape it.  Dry flat on a clean towel.

Store celery wrapped in tin foil in the fridge, it doesn't go brown and the celery stays crunchy.

Store your onions in the fridge. When cutting them up, don't cut the root part this is what makes you cry.  I do it all the time and it works!

To hard boil the pefect egg.  Place it in a pot of cold water, let it come to the boil, put a lid on the pot, turn the element off and let it set for ten minutes.  Remove the pot from the element and then let the water go cold before removing the egg.  Works a treat.

Was listening to a program on how to get children to do their chores. The person suggested that instead of saying "but" it should be "and." He said that "but" leaves it open to debate where as "and" means that there is absolutely no discussion. For example, You, "Johnny please set the table." Johnny ,"I'm busy at the moment." You, "I know that you are busy and yet I would still like you to set the table." This conversation could go on for a while but in the end your grandchild will get the message and do as instructed.

A great way to keep a little one happy for a while is to play balloon with them.  We use to sit at the table and play "table tennis balloon" it would keep her occupied for sometime. Its a great way for your grandchild to get some exercise if you make them get up from the table and retrieve the balloon.  Have fun with this game.

Start a "life book" for your grandchild include photos of family and friends any important occasions that have taken place, underneath put a little story about it.  I have started one for our granddaughter and she will often pick it up to look at.  She has drawn a picture of what she thinks her father looks like, there is a photo of her and her mother which is very important for her.

If you are feeling tired and exhausted in the afternoon.  Have a piece of toast with peanut butter the protein and sweetness of the peanut butter will help overcome the feeling of being tired.

When our granddaughter first came to us she didn't want to get dressed.  To prevent having the dreadful battle I would take her outside, she quickly learnt that it was just too cold to go around without clothes.

Sometimes our granddaughter wouldn't want to take a shower.  A quick remedy was putting her in the shower with all her clothes on, remember though to take off the shoes.  This worked like a charm and thankfully no more battles.

If a cough is keeping your child up at night, before going to bed rub some Vicks on their feet and if possible put their socks on.  This does help alleviate the cough and makes a more comfortable night for all concerned.

Now that daylight saving is here it is harder to get little ones to sleep.  Purchase a cheap roll of black wallpaper black side to window and cellotape it.  It blocks out most of the daylight and helps little ones get to sleep at their normal bedtime.

If your grandchild doesn't like going to sleep at night by her/himself.  Use a CD player and let them listen to bedtime stories.  The library carries a good selection and it doesn't cost anything to belong.

COFFEE FILTERS USES FOR COFFEE FILTERS

1. Cover bowls or dishes when cooking in the microwave.

 2. Clean windows and mirrors.  Coffee filters are lint-free so they'll leave windows sparkling.

3.  Protect China.  Separate your good dishes by putting a coffee filter between each dish.

4.  Protect a cast-iron skillet.  Place a coffee filter in the skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.

5.  Apply shoe polish.  Ball up a lint-free coffee filter.

6.  Recycle frying oil.  After frying, strain oil through a sieve lined with a coffee filter.

7.  Weigh chopped foods.  Place chopped ingredients in a coffee filter on a  kitchen scale.

8.  Hold tacos.  Coffee filters make convenient wrappers for messy foods.

9.  Stop the soil from leaking out of a plant pot.  Line a plant pot with a coffee filter to prevent the soil from going through the drainage holes.
